Hang 10 Pets is pleased to announce that our Cindy has joined Friends of Retired Greyhounds an all volunteer organization dedicated to cooperating with kennel operators and other adoption groups to place retired greyhounds in responsible, loving homes. The organization works with veterinarians to insure that dogs adopted from FOR greyhounds are vaccinated, and in general good health before placing them in homes. In addition to this, they educate individuals and groups about greyhounds, their history, their lives as racing dogs, and their adoption program.

“Favors Project” has collected and donated thousands of collars and leashes over the years and we appreciate everyone’s help to give to our companions so that they may have a better life after rescue. 2012 is a new year and we have been soooo impressed by a group of individuals that have started collecting collars, leashes & coats for the dog companions of the homeless in Denver Colorado. It is very cold and these forgotten companions of the homeless need your help. Over the coming weeks we will be asking for your donations of collars, leashes, dog coats and if possible money to pay for shots, health checkups. In the process this great group also have collected shoes, coats and undergarments for women who are homeless. Many of the homeless aren’t allowed to take their companions into shelters so they stay outside to be with their companions and need your help. We will be setting up collection points and a donation page on our sister web site Hang 10 K-9 Cafe Please contact cindy@hang10pets.com with any questions or to help with this wonderful project.

New Study Shows Dogs in Puppy Mills Suffer Long-lasting, Severe Psychological Harm. A landmark new study finds that dogs used for breeding in large-scale commercial breeding operations (aka ‘puppy mills’) are psychologically harmed and show the effects for years after they leave the breeding facility. The study was done by national animal welfare organization [Best Friends Animal Society in collaboration with Drs. James Serpell and Deborah Duffy at the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine and will be published in the journal Applied Animal Behavior Science. Southern California pet stores sold 'puppy mill' dogs, suit claims

image

A Los Angeles law firm filed a lawsuit Thursday against a chain of Southern California pet stores alleging it sells puppies from commercial breeding facilities, commonly known as “puppy mills.”

The suit, which seeks class-action status, claims that Barkworks, a chain of six stores in Southern California, breeds puppies that are prone to a variety of illnesses and health problems while assuring customers that they come from registered breeders.

Barkworks’ website says the chain buys its puppies only from “professional, reputable breeder[s].”

The plaintiffs -- five customers who bought puppies at Barkworks -- said they received the names of the breeders of their pets from the store, but the information did not correspond to U.S. Department of Agriculture registered breeders.

Designer doggies being sold at auction

With a major pet retailer choosing to halt the sales of trendy, small, cross-breed puppies and the bust of a 500-dog Quebec puppy mill last week, Alberta dog lovers are taking exception to a brave new outlet for puppy mills. An enthusiast of unusual livestock, Angela Mocarski was aghast to see puppies auctioned off in little boxes at Beaver Hill Auction Services’s Odd & Unusual Sale on Sept. 17.

Seven squealing Pomeranian-Chihuahua-mix pups sold for between $200 to $280 a pup. Coming over the conveyor belt, the pups tugged at her heart, even though they were in “perfect little boxes,” and there’s no law against auctioning off puppies.

“I think they crossed a line with the dogs. Society has said the dog and cat don’t fit into the livestock category. There are so many backyard breeders just wanting to make a quick buck. People see it as a quick money grab,” she said.

Requiring a licence to breed dogs and sell them would keep puppy mills at bay, Mocarski said. “If we don’t nip it in the bud today and nobody says anything about it, I think it will slowly become the norm,” she said.

Theresa Ferguson agreed. As president of the Alberta-based Spay Neuter Adoption Program (SNAP), she believes auctioning pets opens a dangerous door.

“There are so many animals looking for homes, that have nowhere to go. We don’t need puppy mills breeding animals to auction off,” she said.

“Those dogs live in hell ... It’s a quick buck for (puppy mill owners). They’re putting them out as fast as they can because it’s quick money.”

Iguanas, snakes, hedgehogs, exotic sheep, pot-bellied pigs — odd and unusual. Designer-cross puppies, formerly known as mutts? Maybe not so much.

“They come through like any other rare or exotic thing we sell, and some of it isn’t that rare, believe me. We sell laying hens,” said auction manager Miles Buswell.

His auctions have traditionally offered herding dogs for their farming customers, but including designer doggies is a new thing that coincides with a major pet retailer’s move to eliminate their sale of designer doggies, he said. “I think you’re right — it’s a new outlet for puppy mills that can’t sell their pups right now,” Buswell said.

Toronto Canada Council bans pet shop sale of dogs, cats, unless they're from shelters.

From Thursday's Globe and Mail

Dogs and cats sold in Toronto pet shops must now come from animal shelters, rescue groups or people giving up animals for free. Toronto city council voted unanimously on Wednesday to make the changes, which aim to put an end to puppy and kitty mills. Councillor Glenn De Baeremaeker put forward the motion. He said puppy mills are bad for pets and consumers. “They’re kept in small cages, they’re not socialized, they have immense health problems,” he said. “Consumers are getting ripped off.” The issue originally went to council in June but was postponed. The council item is referred to as “Banning the Sale of Cats and Dogs in Pet Shops,” but it actually sets out that shops cannot sell dogs or cats unless the animals come from a municipal shelter, a Humane Society or registered rescue group. “It really slams the door closed on people who mass produce animals for profit,” said Mr. De Baeremaeker, adding it should help to stop sales of such animals at flea markets as well. There is a movement across the country to try to restrict sales from puppy mills. Last October, for example, Richmond, B.C., became the first Canadian city to vote to ban all puppy sales at pet stores. Toronto’s decision may further the movement to ban or restrict pets being sold in shops, according to Liz White, from the Animal Alliance of Canada. “The animal protection community from around North America has been watching very closely at what was going on at Toronto city hall and how this issue was unfolding,” she said. She has come through with flying colors. She has since re-grown all of her hair and bears little if any resemblance to the pitiful creature that was pulled from the roadside bloody and fought the monster of starvation. Thanks to the tender loving care of rescuers, the monster has been defeated. Sweet Naome had been adopted and will join a sister dog Sassy in her new forever home.

150 Dogs, 80 Puppies Seized From Hawaii Breeders and Handed to Humane Society image
Some 230 dogs and puppies held in temporary foster care should go to the Hawaiian Humane Society, a judged has ruled, in a case against breeders accused of running a filthy puppy mill in violation of animal cruelty laws. When you see a story like this, the first thing that usually comes to mind—thank you exposé-style TV—may be "animal hoarding," which ranks among the cruelest symptoms of obsessive-compulsive disorders. But puppy mills—commercial dog breeding farms designed to churn out animals for profit, often at the expense of living conditions—are far more pervasive. It's hard to get an accurate read on the full scope of the problem, but the Human Society estimates that "[there] are literally thousands of puppy mills in existence all over the country." And while laws exist in some states to regulate the number of dogs that can be kept in commercial breeding facilities, breeding animals for profit isn't itself illegal in the U.S. In this case, Bradley International—the owners of the alleged puppy mill in Waimanalo, a small community on the island of O'ahu—are accused of basic animal cruelty. Around 150 dogs and 80 puppies were seized in late February, and the agency said they suffered from "mange, malnourishment and matted fur," according to ABC affiliate KITV.com. Police stumbled on the dogs while investigating a trespassing complaint, after hearing dogs barking relentlessly for over half an hour. "Those dogs were in really bad shape," Steve Prieto, a Hawaiian Humane Society Volunteer, told Hawaii News Now after yesterday's decision. "This is really a great day for people that care about animals." The owners still have a shot at retaining the dogs, however: If they post a bond by Thursday morning, they'll retain rights to the animals until a separate criminal case concludes. But according to their attorney, the bond could increase to millions of dollars. "We're ecstatic [about the judge's decision], and we really hope at this point Bradley International understands and heard what the judge said, and we ask that they do not post a bond for their care and let us finally find homes for these animals," Keoni Vaughn of the Hawaiian Humane Society told FOX affiliate KHON.

A new law has been proposed in Michigan that would entitle pet owners to a refund if their dog has a defect due to coming from a Puppy Mill.
